Opening day brings the regulars in just to say hello — then the greenhouses take over. Flats of bedding plants, vegetable starts for your garden, seed racks, onion sets, and the hanging baskets that made us famous. Come Memorial Day weekend, the basket sale is a tradition all its own.
Five deliveries a week roll in from growers we've worked with for decades — some for more than 45 years. Sweet corn by the bushel, canning tomatoes by the box, Red Haven peaches, Stanley plums, melons, green beans, and whatever else the week brings.
Mums in every color you can name, pumpkins and gourds by the wagonload, corn stalks and Indian corn for the porch, and Honey Crisp apples for the table. Then we tuck in for winter — and start planning spring.
Rain or shine, the store is stocked with the old-fashioned goods that keep people coming back: Amish cheese and fresh butter, bacon, glass jars of bulk candy, jams and jellies, spices, canned goods, Plum Creek soft pretzels — and the cookies and cinnamon rolls our reviews rave about.
